Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the year 2002-03. The Department offers full-time UG programme in Mechanical Engineering with an annual intake of 60 students. The programme is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The UG programme is provisionally accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi till 2019 and also Permanently Affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi. The post-graduation in Machine Design was started during the academic year 2014-15 with an approved intake of 18 students. The Department is recognized as a Research Center by Visvesvaraya Technological University(VTU), Belagavi where the number of research scholars registered stands at 20. Currently, the Department is headed by Dr. K. M. Sathish Kumar.

The Department's strength lies in having a good number of experienced and well-qualified faculty. Department has 19 well qualified and dedicated faculty members with 7 faculty holding Doctoral Degree and 12 faculty pursuing their doctoral degree. Faculty members have won awards, are the reviewers for International Journals, Members of LIC, BoS, BoE, DRDO Recruitment Committee. Faculty members have published quality journals and attended various International & National conferences. The faculty members of the department also undergo industry internships. Also, faculty members have authored Text Books to help the student community. The Department is supported by 10 well trained Technical staff. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has state-of-the-art laboratories. These laboratories not only satisfy the curriculum requirements of the students very lucidly but also provide additional facilities to enhance practical knowledge. Department has excellent computing facilities and resources in terms of both hardware and software.

The Department has adopted the practice of Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The Department has constituted a Department Advisory Board (DAB), an elite group comprises members from Academia, Industry and Research organizations. DAB has been set up to take valuable suggestions and views on the activities happening in the department. The members of our Department Advisory Board are Dr. Seshan S (IISc), Dr. Vijay Desai (NITK, Surathkal), Mr.AjithDeshpande (Rolls Royce), Mr. R. Sridhar (Federal-Mogul), Mr.Manjunath. P (Scientist, NAL), Mr.RohitRao (Rolls Royce), Dr. H.K. Govindaraju (Dean – Student Welfare) and Dr. K. M. Sathish Kumar (HoD and Convener).

The Department has signed 14 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Industries, Research and Academic Institutes namely The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI), Bengaluru, Engineering Materials Inc, Sandhar Technologies, Bengaluru, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru, BMW, Bengaluru, Volvo India Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bengaluru, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal, Kshipra Simulations Pvt. Ltd, Bengaluru, National Design Research Forum (NDRF), Bengaluru and Federal-Mogul, Bengaluru to name a few.

The Department has established “Industries supported Engines laboratory” with the support of Toyota Kirloskar Motors Pvt. Ltd., BMW India Pvt. Ltd., and Volvo India Pvt. Ltd.

The Department in a quest to build Holistic development among the students, various programs were organized. Innovative teaching methods are followed to impart quality education to the students. The Department organizes Conferences, Workshops and Faculty Development Programs periodically. These activities will greatly benefit the faculty members to comprehend the essence of teaching and can teach very effectively and proficiently. The Department hosts and supports several activities like Project-Based Learning (PBL), Interdisciplinary projects, Societal relevance projects, Skill Based Workshops, Student Internships, Industrial Visits, Partial Delivery of the curriculum by Industry experts, Poster presentations to name a few. All these activities will greatly enhance the learning ability of the students.

  2. Mr. G.L Anantha Krishna Delivered a talk on “Basics of Design Engineering and Mechanical Vibrations” under SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM for technical staff of various institutions organized by Mechanical engineering department of BMSIT&M. Talk was on 18th July 2018.
  3. Dr. K.M Sathish Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering delivered a invited lecture on “Introduction to Automation and Industry 4.0” during Faculty Development Program on “Automotive Electronics and Industrial Automation” from 25th – 29th June 2018 organized by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical & Electronics Engineering, BMSIT&M
  4. Mr.Keerthi Kumar participated and exhibited project titled “Air Conditioner Using E-Waste”- State level Engineering Students Project Exhibition and Competition from 22nd to 24th May 2018 to SRISTHI INNOVATION EXCHANGE-2018 Organized by ABVP, held at DayanandaSagar College of Engineering, Bengaluru. Won Consolation Prize under the catagery of “Waste Management”
  5. Mr. Keerthi Kumar participated and exhibited project titled “Solar Wind Hybrid Power Generating System” in 2 Days State Level Technical Exhibition and Competition Program – “NAVITANTRIKS” held at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural energy and Development (MGIRED), Bangalore on 27 and 28 April 2018. And was Awarded as Best Innovative Project with cash prize of 3,000/-
  6. Mr. MadhuM.C, Assistant Professor delivered a talk on Fundamentals of Solar energy for the FDP “Recent Trends in Renewable Energy” conducted by EEE and civil from 22 to 27 Jan 2018. The talk enabled the audienceto understand the merits and demerits of renewable energy and its relevance to today’s energy scenario. Theoretical aspects of solar cells were also highlighted.
  7. Dr. K.MSathish Kumar Associate Professor chaired a technical session at International Conference on Research in Mechanical Engineering Sciences RiMES 2017 held at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal on 21st December 2017
  8. Mr. Praveen Kumar T.N was granted an amount of six lakhs under the VTU Research Grant Scheme for the project titled, "Development and comprehensive characterization of aluminum ceramic-microsphere foamed composite."
  9. Dr. H.K Govindaraju and Dr. A.V Suresh have been nominated as a member of VTU Belgaum Local Inspection Committee.
  10. Team of Mechanical students, Motorheads represented BMS Institute of Technology and Management, at the Indian Karting Race (IKR 2018-2019), organized by Imperial Society of Innovative Engineers (ISIE) in association with the Federation of Motorsports Club of India (FMSCI).The event was held at Galgotias University, Greater Noida from 4th-8th February, 2019 and Buddh International Circuit, Greater Noida from 9th-10th February, 2019. The team cleared the “Technical Inspection” round and “Brake Test” round at first attempt with excellent performance. In the “Acceleration Test”, Team Motorheads won the “Best Acceleration-Engine Category” Award for the fastest vehicle crossing the line with a time of just 4.5seconds. They received a prize money of Rs. 10,000/-. The team finished third in “Crosspad Test” with a time of 34seconds to cross the line. In the “Endurance Race” test, They finished at 6th place overall out of the 21 teams competing due to a minor technical issue which was rectified on the spot. We received the “Spirit of Indian Karting Award” for participation.
  11. The students of 4th semester Edwin Easo Mathew, Akash S Nambiar, Abhishek S.A., KaushikBalasundar, and Aby J Kottoor participated in National Level Technical Paper Presentation Competition on 2nd March 2018 held at NIE Mysuru for papers presentation, titled "Industrial Environment Monitoring Device" & "Voice controlled wheelchair with hotword detection" and won the 2nd place
  12. Madhusudhan K.G of IV semester has participated in inter collegiate fest “Tarang 2017” and secured First place in CADD modeling held on 12 & 13 May -2017
  13. Srikanth.M of IV semester has participated in inter collegiate fest “REVAMP 2017” and secured Second place in3D modeling held on 5 & 6 April -2017

Team of Mechanical Engineering students successfully completed their ambitious project ECOKART sponsored by the institution and have participated in the national level competition held at BML Munjal University, Dist.   15. Saman Siddibappa , 5th Semester of Mechanical engineering won cash prize of 1000USD and a trip to Malaysia/Bangkok. Engineeria 2017 -An international quiz contest for civil, mechanical and related streams of engineering. About 1lakh students across 6 countries participated in the event, the final round was held in Pune

  17. Sahana Upadaya and Harishitha Of 4th semester won the runners up In the VTU badminton Zonal’s 2016

  20. The Department started the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) INDIA BMSIT Collegiate club; under which various activities including FDP, industrial visits, seminars, workshops and competitions are organized. In the year 2015, a two day workshop on "Automobile Electronics" was organized in collaboration with IISC (Bangalore).
  21. Mariam Tahoora of 6th semester has won the Wipro Earthian 2015, an Essay competition in the College category.
  22. Siddharth Kashyap (8th Semester), participated in and won the Regional Championship at the intercollegiate level of the "Simply Finance Quiz 2014 Bangalore" organized by Tata Mutual Fund.
  23. VTU Ranks by the department so far: 2008- Mary Ernackle Abraham Abraham, 2012- Hemanth Kumar (10th rank), 2013- Kanishk Bhadani (8th rank).
