Master of Computer Applications

The MCA program is intended to provide modern industry-oriented education in applied computer science, thereby focusing on providing a sound theoretical background as well as good practical exposure to students in the relevant areas. The MCA Department was established in the year 2003 with an approved intake of 60 students with an excellent Library and Laboratory facilities. It has 12 qualified, experienced and dedicated young teaching staff and 2 technical staff members creating an amicable teaching and learning environment. The faculty members of the dept. have executed their responsibilities as coordinators/ members of the BOS/BOE in VTU, other universities and autonomous institutions as well as editorial board members/reviewers of international journals.

The department has an aggregate of VTU examination results of nearly 90%, secured 9 VTU Ranks and achieved placement of nearly 90% since its inception. The faculty members are involved with an array of research interests such as Wireless Networks (Cognitive, Ad-hoc and Sensor networks), Network Security, Cloud Computing, E-Commerce, Data Mining, and Digital Image Processing among others.
The department has organized series of Technical/Expert Talk, Workshops, Conferences, Industrial Visits, Alumni Interaction, Parents Teachers meetings, Project work Evaluation/Exhibition, Technical Competitions to enrich the students from different perspectives and counseling through effective proctor system to support slow learners and boost quick learners.

Best Practices :

The department offers electives in advanced subjects which has relevance in the industry. The department organizes partial delivery of courses (PDC) by the industry experts as adjunct faculty for the several courses such as DBMS and J2EE with objectives of understanding applying/analyzing the industrial application of the core subjects and current versions of the subject.
Dept. of MCA has adopted other several best practices as a part of it’s Teaching and Learning Processes (TLP) with OBE model, to name a few, Co-operative Learning, Continues Evaluation, offering Value added Courses(VAC) to enhance student competency and make industry Ready, Remedial/Tutorial classes to enhance problem-solving skills in critical subjects, Rubrics based evaluation of Seminars and Projects work, Seminar on the topic beyond the syllabus by Individual students, Student-Teacher joint paper publications, Student/Faculty Internship to get exposed on contemporary skills/project works, deputing Faculty members to participate in workshops/ conferences, presenting invited talks, participating as a resource person in Conferences/workshops/symposiums, authoring Technical books and project/problem based learning.

Partial Delivery of Course :

Resource persons are invited from industry on a selected topic of the interest to deliver the session for the duration of 6-10 hours. The classes are generally based on presentations and hands-on sessions by the industry expert in a particular domain.

Value Added Course
The program/course is generally conducted /offered towards PO attainment along with a focus on feedback taken from various stakeholders. The VAC is offered for the duration of 10-25 hours in a semester. List of Value Added Courses offered are Android/ Mobile Application, Software Testing, NoSQL, Big data, etc.

Continuous Evaluation
Student’s performance is evaluated on a continuous basis. The assessment such as Internal Tests, MCQ’s and regular evaluation in lab sessions are conducted.

  1. The faculty members/Students have published nearly 100 in various reputed National/International Journals, as well as in peer-reviewed National/International Conferences, including conferences organized by IEEE and ELESEVIER.
  2. The Department is been recognized as Research Center since 2016-17 with 3 Ph. D holders and 6 Research scholars.
  3. The department has earned 9 VTU ranks since its inception.
  4. The Department organizes industrial visits for the higher semester students in order to impart holistic education and a better understanding of the theoretical concepts. The various educational visits for the previous years have included visits to KTwo Technologies, CISCO, and TCS etc.
  5. Nagabhusan S.V is been awarded Ph.D. degree by the VTU during the 17th Convocation.
  6. Department of MCA publishes annual newsletter called AGRATHA, Research compendium called SAMSHODANA and Project abstracts are published in TechSangraha.
  7. The department organizes Samshodhana Samvaadha similar to Jannavardana which is conducted at institute level.
  8. The department conducts project/problem based learning to improve analytical / analyzing skills at various cognitive levels.
  9. The assignments are given at higher Bloom?s cognitive levels (K4 to K6).
  10. The department conducts student?s seminar beyond the syllabus on contemporary topic with research orientation.
  11. The MCA alumni contributes as a resource person for workshop/expert talk/ career guidance.
  12. The department TLP focuses on case study based learning and innovative question in Internal Tests and blended learning in its Outcome Based Education (OBE) Model.
  13. The department organizes "Joy of Giving" as Academic Social Responsibility every semester since 2013-14.
